Sleep Torpor is about a girl who has rapidly changing moods.
Florence Shaw’s first comic, developed as part of the Santoro Correspondence Course, experiments with the use of found narration sourced from online forums, synthesising personal experiences and collective feeling. Dealing in particular with anxiety and depression, the frames shift between the sparsity of both emptiness and calm, and the busy claustrophobia of panic.
Throughout, a wide range of layered tone and line is flattened both by the riso printing method and use of single colour, visually echoing the leaden heaviness of exhaustion despite the heightened emotional states depicted.
